🟩 The documentary, created to draw attention to the hardships faced by miners, takes its name from the song "Sixteen Tons," which describes the struggles of miners. The documentary, which covers its subject in 9 episodes – The Bronze Age, The Discovery of Fire, The Age of Public Relations, The Age of Percentages, The Diamond Age, The Invention of Writing, The Radio Age, and The Age of Freedom – was re-edited in 2021 with new visual material and techniques. New versions of the song "Sixteen Tons" were added in the re-production.
Reminding us that the miner's fate is not death, and that workplace safety violations and subcontracting have cost and will cost hundreds of workers their lives, Ümit Kıvanç's film '16 Tons', which ironically conveys the connection between the history of exploitation and the history of humanity, is, in Ümit Kıvanç's words , "a film about conscience and the free market."

Following the screening of the film “16 Tons” at the Bergama Cultural Center, an interview with Ümit Kıvanç by Murat Büyükyılmaz from Fikir Gazetesi on the risk of death, capitalism, just transition, and the future of journalism was published on June 28th.

Ümit Kıvanç
1956’da, İstanbul’da doğdu. İstanbul Üniversitesi Basın-Yayın Yüksek Okulu mezunu. Milliyet yazı işlerinde, Cumhuriyet haber merkezinde, önce on beş günlük sonra haftalık Yeni Gündem dergisinde, İletişim Yayınları’nda çalıştı. Siyasî yazıların yansıra hikâyeler, romanlar yazdı, kitapları 1987’den itibaren yayımlandı. Birikim dergisinde, Radikal’de, Nokta’da, Tarafta, gazetecilik platformu P24’te yazdı, internet gazetesi Duvar’da yazıyor. 1990ların ortalarından bu yana belgesel ve deneysel filmler yapıyor. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü’ne belgeseller, eğitim filmleri yaptı. Agos gazetesinin hazırlığında ve çıkışında yer aldı. Belgesel sinema filmleri yapıyor.
